“Working with the Global Affairs Canada to have their first foreign mission BOMA BEST certified silver has been a rewarding experience for BOMA China. We are very proud to have contributed our expertise in getting all six of their buildings certified and look forward to continuing the growth of BOMA BEST throughout China.” Dominic Lau, BOMA China, Executive Director.
The BOMA BEST Sustainable Buildings Certification program drives the success of property managers and building operators in improving their buildings’ environmental performance. To do this, buildings are evaluated individually within a framework that critically assesses ten key areas of environmental performance and management including energy, water, air, purchasing and waste.
We want to be the greenest diplomatic mission in Beijing, which means taking concrete action to reduce our environmental footprint. I’m proud to announce the successful Silver level certification of the Embassy Canada to China under the BOMA BEST program, which is the result of a strong partnership with BOMA Canada and BOMA China. This is the first BOMA BEST certification of a Canadian mission, and it brings us one step closer to our greenest mission goal. Using the BOMA BEST standard, we were able to reduce our environmental impact by making changes to our building management processes, implementing minor sustainability projects, and creating high levels of stakeholder engagement. We are already looking ahead to the renewal process, and we will aiming for Gold level certification. – Jim Nickel, Chargé d’affaires
Achieving BOMA BEST certification is part of Global Affairs Canada’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint abroad, and the Canadian Embassy in China is the first international mission to reach this milestone. Initiatives taken by the Embassy include changes to existing building management processes, the implementation of sustainability projects (installation of low-flow toilets, LED lighting, motion sensors, programmable timers, litter-less lunches, green cleaning protocols, battery recycling, electric and hybrid vehicles, and on-site bike sharing), and a strong stakeholder engagement campaign led by the Embassy’s Green Committee.
“Our Embassy shows that sustainability in commercial real estate really can be achieved in China – it is an example not just for Canadian citizens but for Chinese commercial real estate professionals too,” says BOMA Canada CEO Benjamin Shinewald, “Congratulations to all. Thank you. Merci beaucoup. Xie Xie.”
